New Dust Project 2010-01-31he Fog and Smoke Working Group has started work on a new project: BSR E1.40-201x, Recommendations for the Planning of Theatrical Dust Effects. A wide variety of products are used to create dust effects in entertainment productions. The effects are most commonly used in motion picture and television production, where, for example, a bag of fuller's earth might be placed on top of an explosive charge to enhance the smoke and debris from the blast. However, they are also used in theatrical productions and within theme parks. The use of dust as an aerosol raises concerns for hazards such as combustibility and health effects from inhalation or ingestion, which, although well known in some sectors of the industry, are poorly understood in others. This document would provide recommendations for how to assess the safety of such effects and to plan their use so that the risks are acceptably low. Anyone interested in working on the standard is invited to contribute by participating in future public reviews or by joining the Fog & Smoke Working Group. A working group application form is available at http://www.esta.org/tsp/working_groups/docs/apply.PDF.
