Five New ESTA Standards Now Available
2009-10-16

On 14 September 2009, ANSI's Board of Standards Review approved four new ESTA standards and the revision of a fifth. ANSI E1.5, E1.27-2, E1.29, E1.30-3, and E1.30-7 are now available for purchase or free download on The ESTA Foundation publications sales website at http://www.estafoundation.org/pubs.htm.

ANSI E1.5 – 2009, Entertainment Technology - Theatrical Fog Made With Aqueous Solutions Of Di- And Trihydric Alcohols, is a revision of the 2003 edition of ANSI E1.5 to correct the listing of the CAS registry numbers for the dipropylene glycol used in some glycol fogs. The 2003 version lists the CAS number for only one of the common isomers, but usually a mixture of several isomers is used in fog fluids. All these commonly used isomers and the mixture, which has its own CAS number, are listed in the new E1.5. This standard is available for free download from the website.

ANSI E1.27-2 – 2009, Entertainment Technology -- Recommended Practice for Permanently Installed Control Cables for Use with ANSI E1.11 (DMX512-A) and USITT DMX512/1990 Products, is a wholly new standard and the second part of a two-part standard for DMX512 cabling. The first part, ANSI E1.27-1 - 2006, is for portable cables. Part 2 is, as the title says, for permanently installed cables. The document is available for $40 list. ESTA member and quantity discounts are available.

ANSI E1.29 – 2009, Product Safety Standard for Theatrical Fog Generators that Create Aerosols of Water, Aqueous Solutions of Glycol or Glycerin, or Aerosols of Highly Refined Alkane Mineral Oil, is intended to help guide product safety testing laboratories (e.g., UL, ETL) in evaluating fog-making equipment for design or construction defects that might create unacceptable hazards. It is based on ANSI/UL 998 – 2006, Humidifiers, but has modifications to deal with safety issues peculiar to fog generators. At this time, fog generators usually are evaluated only as heating appliances to assure they are not a fire or shock hazard. ANSI E1.29 considers those issues, but also has safety tests for the fog generated. The document is available for $40 list. ESTA member and quantity discounts are available.

ANSI E1.30-3 – 2009, EPI 25, Time Reference in ACN Systems Using SNTP and NTP, is another recipe in the E1.30 cookbook for ACN. It offers ways of providing a time reference so that events can be synchronized. This standard is available for free download.

ANSI E1.30-7 – 2009, EPI 29, Allocation of Internet Protocol Version 4 Addresses to ACN Hosts, is a recipe that changes some of the rules for ACN so that devices with IP addresses not set by DHCP can be used on a network. Device Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a very convenient way to assign IP addresses on a network, but there are cases when IP addresses have to be assigned a different way, perhaps manually. This EPI suggests how. This standard is available for free download.
